Mark 13:24-37

It is so easy for Christmas to catch us off-guard and unprepared.  The season of Advent is the Church’s invitation to prepare ourselves for the celebration of the First Coming of Jesus in Christmas as we prepare ourselves for His Second Coming in glory.

What it Means that Christ is King

As Paul prays for the Ephesians, he asks that they grow in their knowledge of God as they understand the hope of their calling, the glory of their inheritance, and the greatness of God’s power at work in all who believe.  We are reminded, then, that to say Jesus Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords is to say that the same power that makes Him to reign over death and sin is the power which is at work in us.

Entering our Master’s Joy

Jesus calls us to enter into the fullness of His joy as we seek to hear His, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”  From the Parable of the Talents, we learn three important lessons about entering into that joy.  First, who we know the Master to be determines how we use the resources He has given us.  Second, we must learn to thank God for the resources He has given us.  Third, what matters in the end is not the yield of our service, but our desire to faithfully use all that God has given us.

Matthew 25:1-13

We all know that difficult times come in life and that in those times the health of our faith is revealed.  Jesus calls us to maintain a faith that is ready for anything - from life’s crises to the return of our Lord.  As we consider this parable, we find three helpful steps for maintaining such a faith.  We must intentionally live for Jesus, practice spiritual disciplines, and live in accord with Jesus’ will.

Revelation 7:9-17

As John shares his vision of heavenly worship around the throne of God, we catch an incredible vision of our heavenly hope.  As we see that all who come to Jesus number among the saints, we find ourselves inspired to not lose hope in this life, but live lives that touch and inspire the saints around us.
