Matthew 6: 19-21
ash-wednesday-2009
As Lent begins, the Church invites us to examine our lives and draw closer to God. The work of Lent is the work of being sure that our hearts are given wholly to God. If, as Jesus said, our hearts are with our treasure, then a key question for Lent is whether the treasure of this world is our god, or if God is our true treasure.

2 Kings 2:1-12; Psalm 50:1-6; 2 Corinthians 4:3-6; Mark 9:2-9
Grounded in the saving work of God in Israel’s history, Elisha followed Elijah and saw him taken in a fiery chariot by a whirlwind up to heaven. Peter, James, and John followed Jesus up a mountain where they saw the glory of God shining in the very one who said he would be crucified. Are we ready to let God show us real life? Are we ready to live in the light of the beauty, truth, and goodness of the cross and resurrection?

Mark 1:21-28
As Jesus teaches in the synagogue at Capernaum and confronts a demon, the people become aware of the sheer power and authority of Jesus’ word. The people have nothing to comapare Jesus to, and as a result they realize that Jesus is no meek and mild sage or even a great human teacher - He speaks with power over sickness, evil, and even death. Jesus still speaks to us with that same voice; the question is, how can we hear it?
