John 12:1-13

As Jesus’ public ministry comes to a close, He invites His hearers to understand the importance of the events about to occur.  The Cross, Jesus teaches, is His mission, the judgment of the world, and the pattern of God’s life.  There is no Christianity without the cross.  As we approach Holy Week, the Church invites us to follow Jesus through these events so that we can more fully know Him and understand His work in our lives.

Mark 8:31-39

Jesus calls us to follow Him by taking up our cross, letting go of our lives, our hopes and desires for life.  But do we really lay down all part of our lives: our time, our talent, and our treasure?  The way to true life is through this kind of letting go.

Mark 1:9-13

As the Spirit drives Jesus into the wilderness to fast and be tempted by Satan for forty days, we find that Jesus is being strengthened and steeled for His mission: the Cross.  Likewise, we are called to join Jesus for the forty days of Lent as we journey to the Cross and allow the Lord to strengthen us to live holy lives and to join in His Mission of taking the gospel to the world.
