Mark 10:35-45

october-18-2009

As Jesus heads toward the Cross, His disciples still do not understand that the glory of Jesus will not be revealed in political and military might, but in the Cross.  As the disciples position themselves for worldly power and honor, Jesus teaches that true greatness comes in following His example of serving.  How can we serve those around us?

John 6:35-38

ordination-sermon

Preached upon the occasion of Fr. Greg’s ordination to the priesthood, this sermon offers three insights into Christian ministry and discipleship.  First, our life and ministry reveal our relationship with the Father.  Second, we are to show Jesus and His salvation to those around us.  Third, we are the Father’s gift to the Son He loves.

Mark 10:17-31

october-11-2009

In this account of the Rich Young Man, Jesus again teaches that entrance into the Kingdom of God comes not from our efforts, but as a gift from God as we choose to follow Jesus as our Lord and Savior.  In the course of this teaching, Jesus also challenges us to cast away everything that would keep us from wholeheartedly following Him.  For many people, as it was with the Rich Young Man, this will involve finding a new relationship with money and the things of this world.

October 4: Nurturing the Gift of Marriage

Posted October 4th, 2009 by fr. karl

october-4-2009

Mark 10: 2-16

As Pharisees try to entangle Jesus in a theological debate regarding divorce, Jesus goes behind their question to God’s purpose for marriage.  While Moses allowed divorce to limit the damage we can do to marriages, and while there is forgiveness for divorce, Jesus holds up the ideal of two becoming one and so shining God’s covenant-faithful love in world that needs to see unity, forgiveness, and love in action.  We need to nurture the gift of our marriages - both our own and those of our brothers and sisters around us.
