Luke 21:25-36
It has been said that Advent provides the context which gives meaning to Christmas. As the Season of Advent begins, our eyes are drawn to the Second Coming of Christ and the call to be ready for certain His return. This is the great Christian Hope which reaches into the present and transforms the way we live.

thanksgiving-2009
Joel 2:21-27; Psalm 126; 1 Timothy 2:1-7; Matthew 6:25-33
Thanksgiving for what is most basic to life is an entry point into the depths of the gift of life in God. Yet we are reminded that all of life’s good gifts are meant to draw us into God’s life and are not ends in and of themselves. When we forget this, we are tempted to worship the creature rather than the Creator. But there is “one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus.” Only in Him can we enjoy the gifts that God has given us even as we come to know that they are meant to be shared with those around us, especially the poor, the least, the disadvantaged. So we unite ourselves to Christ that we might give to God our Great Thanksgiving.

An Order for Family Devotions for Advent
Click here for An Order for Family Devotions with the Advent Wreath (you don’t need an Advent Wreath to do them!). The file is meant to be used as a one sheet booklet, so either use on-line or print front and back on one sheet and fold. This is a great way to devote time as a family to God’s Word and Prayer, gathering together to center our lives around the One who is Coming into the world: Jesus Christ.
Readings for each week of Advent, for use with the devotions, or for your own discipline of reading scripture, will be posted here:
Advent Reflections, Week 1.
Advent Reflections, Week 2.
Advent Reflections, Week 3.
Advent Reflections, Week 4.
Family and personal devotions supplement and draw their strength from our corporate worship as the body of Christ. Don’t miss out on the unique themes of each Sunday in Advent.

Revelation 1:4-8
november-22-2009
To say that Jesus Christ is King is one of the most subversive and encouraging things we can ever say! Because He reigns over all we know that we have been set free from sin to live LIFE, and that even now, even when we can’t always see that He is in control, that He is bringing to fulfillment the restoration of all creation. Until He returns, then, we are to live as His loyal subjects in the freedom of the Spirit as we seek to draw many to His Kingdom.

Here’s our first issue of our Children’s Ministry Newletter: St. Paul’s KidsNews, Vol. 1, Iss. 1, Nov.-Dec., 2009. We’ll likely be making some changes as we go, but we hope that this helps families to keep in touch with what is going on in ministry with and by children here at St. Paul’s!

Hebrews 10:11-25
In contrast to that religion which repeats itself endlessly, claiming to tie us to the cycles and rhythms of this Created world yet unable to deal decisively with sin, Jesus Christ has made and is himself the one, perfect sacrifice. Only as we are united to him are we drawn into God’s life here on earth as well as heaven. On this Commitment Sunday, we reflect on money as one example of an earthly power claiming to order our lives that must be placed in submission under Christ’s feet. God takes what we bring, our gifts of money, repentance, holiness, faith, and unites them to his Son, who alone is the perfect gift from the Father to us and from us back to God.

Mark 12:38-44
We join Jesus as He takes the opportunity of a memorable offering in the Temple to teach His disciples, and us, what God is looking for in our giving to Him. Jesus teaches three things about giving in this short episode. First, our giving is meant to express our hearts, our love, as they cost us something. Second, our giving is meant to express our trust. Third, in God’s hands, our gifts, even when seemingly small, can do great things; even things we never imagined.
