John 1:1-18

december-27-2009

As we continue our celebration of Christmas, we gaze at this child through the lens of the great prologue to John’s gospel and come to the realization that our infinite God took our finite flesh upon Himself.  How are we to respond to this incredible gift?

Luke 2:1-20

december-24-2009

In many ways, Luke describes an uneventful, normal birth of a child to a humble but righteous couple.  But with the angel’s message, we find that just behind the ordinary is the extraordinary: that this child is the long-awaited Savior of the world!  Even now, God quietly and often unnoticeably transforms our lives in ways that only faith can see.  As we celebrate this Christmas, may we know that God is indeed in our midst to save and transform our lives.

December 20 2009 (Advent Four): Waiting with Our Lady

Luke 1:39-56

“Blessed are you among women, blessed is the fruit of your womb. . . and blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.” If John (the Baby!) points to Jesus, Elizabeth points to Mary. We are called to imitate Mary, and indeed Christians throughout the centuries have asked Mary for help in imitating Mary! For Mary leads us to Christ Jesus, the Word made flesh, God’s Promise Fulfilled. And we are made a part of his body that we too might bear the fruit of obedience in us. In these last days of Advent, let’s wait with our Lady, rejoicing in the God who saves us.

Luke 3:7-18

december-13-2009

On this Sunday of Joy, we need to understand the joy of repentance.  Repentance, as a way of life, is love seeking to stay close to God and to walk in His will.  Repentance, then, keeps us in the obedience which produces joy in our lives.  This joy not only fills our lives with blessing, but shines a winsome light into the world which can draw people to Jesus.
