John 17:20-26

may-16-2010

Jesus reveals His missionary strategy for the Church as He prays for us to be caught up into the life and love of the Father through the Spirit.  As we learn to live in the power of the Holy Spirit, we will be made like Jesus, be equipped to build up the Church and spread the gospel, and manifest a unity that will help the world believe that Jesus was sent by the Father to be the Savior of all.

John 14:23-29

As we continue in our Meaning of Easter teaching series, we near the conclusion of our studies.  As Pentecost draws near, we come to understand that the Cross and Resurrection opened the way for a new and deep work within the people of God.  As a result of Easter, Christians are the home of the Father and the Son by the presence of the Holy Spirit who not only unites us to the Godhead, but produces in us nothing less than the life of Jesus Himself.

John 13:31-35

Jesus calls us to love one another as He loved us, which, as He looked to the Cross, must surely include the call to forgive one another.  As we live in an awareness of God’s forgiveness and extend that forgiveness to those around us, we find ourselves set free from anger and hate and we make ourselves known as Jesus’ disciples.

Revelation 7:9-17; Psalm 23; John 10:22-30

The Shepherd’s glory is in His sheep. The coming glory found in the Resurrection of Christ and the sending of His Spirit involves the restoration of the rule of creation, given to Adam and Eve, to God’s people in the new Adam, Jesus Christ. Yet this rule is unlike earthly rule as it participates in the rule of the slain Lamb who sits upon the throne. It is the cross-shaped love of Jesus that determines the shape of our Resurrection life and we await with hope the coming Kingdom, even as the Spirit intercedes for us when we are unable to square our present sufferings with the coming glory.

John 21:1-19

As Jesus eats breakfast with the disciples, we are reminded of the physical nature of Resurrection.  Resurrection is that qualitatively new bodily life that belongs to the Kingdom of God.  Resurrection also reminds us that to God, this physical creation is worth redeeming and restoring, and so we are meant to truly enjoy the goodness of life.

John 20:19-31

In our second week of The Meaning of Easter, we consider the theme of evidence for the resurrection.  We meet Thomas in our gospel reading, struggling with doubt.  This doubt, rather than being the opposite of faith, is actually an opportunity to grow to a deeper and more convinced faith.

Luke 24:1-12

With the Resurrection of Jesus, we find that one fact that changes everything - including us.  Because He lives, we are forgiven and free from our sins.

John 13:1-17, 31-35

As Jesus celebrates the Passover with His disciples, He gives them a memorable meal.  The Last Supper and Footwashing both point to the Cross and are meant to help Jesus’ disciples understand both the centrality of the Cross and how to follow the example of His way of life.

Philippians 2:5-11

march-28-2010

As we enter into Holy Week, the Church invites us to walk with Jesus through these mighty events.  As we do, we not only engage the acts which brought us salvation, we learn a pattern of life and discover God’s glory and joy.
