St. Paul’s Music Ministry

Director

Sue Wagner has been an organist at St. Paul’s since 1975. Senior Choir Director since 1979 and Youth Choir Director since 1981. A member of the Kern County Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and Choral Conductors Guild, she is one of the most respected organists/musicians in our community and the engine behind our annual Lenten Organ Recital Series.

Our Organ

St. Paul’s is very fortunate to have a wonderful 32-rank pipe organ, which was built and installed by the Schantz Organ Company in the spring of 1996. Voiced in English Romantic style, the instrument is extremely versatile and can handle music of any period.

Senior Choir

St. Paul’s has a long history of fine choral music and our adult choir continues in this tradition. Along with enhancing worship with classical and contemporary anthems, our choir augments our Sunday worship by supporting the congregational singing of hymns and service music. New singers are enthusiastically welcomed.

Youth Choir

Our St. Paul’s Youth Choir is designed for youth 8 years old to High School and meets weekly during the school year Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 in the Choir Room. Along with singing anthems during Sunday Worship Service, they also assist in supporting congregational singing of hymns and service music.

Handbell Ringers

There are two groups: one for beginners and novice ringers, and one for advanced ringers (by audition).

Lenten Organ Recital Series

St. Paul’s Lenten Noontime Organ Recital Series is a twenty-year tradition in Bakersfield and attracts music lovers from diverse faiths and backgrounds. Different local organists perform, including our own Sue Wagner.

Instrumentalists and Musicians

We are blessed to have a number of fine instrumentalists in our parish who frequently play during our Sunday and holiday worship services. Several of these are widely respected musicians in the greater Bakersfield community.
